"Someone wicked, this way comes... How lovely." -Morrigan, the Burnt Witch Among the accursed undead and grave-prodding necromancers of the Nordshire Cemetery, Zelus, Lord of Styx, is a particularly vile Revenant. Scorned by the gods themselves, he serves as a beacon of wicked inspiration to Tya's most depraved. Zelus was once the dean of a college affiliated with the White Tower, widely renowned for his breakthroughs in the controversial field of conjuration magic. Despite his success, Zelus felt his colleagues were too fearful of darker sources of knowledge, accusing them of being superstitious fools, traitors to the academic duties of the White Tower. He felt the forbiddance of studying necromancy was holding back magical advancements, and thus established a secret society dedicated to pursuing forbidden knowledge. Selecting his most promising students as apprentices, he sent them across Tya to investigate numerous leads. The society unearthed tomes filled with dark, ancient, and mysterious magic, none as enticing as a strange runestone found near the Nordshire Cemetery. Its inscriptions not only divulged how to enter the Netherworld and unlock a great power, but how to cheat death itself. "He who wears the Helm of the Netherworld, shall never die nor grow old." Following the instructions of the runes, Zelus crafted a scythe to cleave a portal to the Netherworld, sacrificing three of his apprentices to do so and adorning their skulls to his weapon. In that ghastly plane, Zelus stole the Helm of the Netherworld, granting him incredible power over a great source of energy– the River Styx. However, the God of the Netherworld punished Zelus for his insolence. While he believed he was immune to death, he was also never to truly live. Upon leaving the Netherworld, his soul was shattered and his body broken, transforming him into a gruesome Revenant. Rotting and reeking after living centuries as an abomination, Zelus lingers amidst the putrid fogs of the Nordshire Cemetery, ever searching with the Helm of the Netherworld for new and terrible power. He clutches his jagged scythe as blue flames of the dead dance on his shoulders, marking his cursed existence.
