0Wrenched from the Mire
"Gods above, what have we done?" – Dassomi The southern sweep of Blackroot Bog is a place most Tyans dread, known for its toxic fumes, shifting swamps, and treacherous inhabitants. Amidst the rot lies the ruins of Murkspire, a southern garrison of the ancient scalekin kingdom now buried deep in the mire. Yet something far more sinister lingers here—an ancient, forgotten force, permeating the very air and earth. Legends tell of a tormented spirit haunting this region: a once-proud Scalekin sorceress, Vixera, who delved too deeply into poisoncraft and became one with the bog's lethal essence. Isolated in Murkspire, she worked with athanors, alchemical vats used to harness the bog's deadly fumes for her enchantments. How she came to be trapped within one remains unclear—some say it was a failed experiment; others claim she sealed herself inside, seeking to transcend her mortal form and emerge of her own will, a master of the poison that surrounded her. Whatever the truth, the athanor did not merely trap her; it became her world, a suffocating quasi-realm of her own making, rampant with noxious gas and corruption. Inside the athanor, centuries passed in torment. Vixera's essence twisted, her body decaying as the fumes consumed her, leaving her a grotesque mockery of her former self. Hallucinations plagued her mind as she rotted within, her figure warping until she was no longer Scalekin but a demon of agony. Her name was lost, her identity eroded by the relentless poison, and all that remained was a seething hatred for her fate. In this cauldron of corruption, the Breath of Decay was born. The balance of her toxic prison was shattered when the Esoteria Order, driven by their insatiable thirst for knowledge, unearthed her alchemical devices during an expedition into the bog. Their reckless excavation dismantled the athanor that confined her, releasing Vixera into the world. Rather than gratitude, she greeted her liberators with venomous wrath, threatening to drown them in her lethal fumes. Seeing the danger, the Esotericists proposed a dark bargain: Vixera would be granted dominion over the remnants of Murkspire to continue her sorcery, while the Order would be free to explore the southern bog without interference. Now free from her centuries-long imprisonment, Vixera broods over her future. Though she outwardly seeks to plunge Tya into a world of decay, spreading her poison across the land, her true agony stems from her own transformation. She is consumed by the resentment of her fate, loathing the monstrous form she has become. Vixera's true goal is not merely to poison the world, but to ensure that every living thing understands the torment of being twisted into an abomination. As her toxic cloud expands, the people of Tya fear the dark days to come, for the Breath of Decay has returned, and the world will choke on its fumes.
