When the soldiers of Fort Blacklast return from skirmishes against the vicious enemies of the north, it's not the roaring heat of the fort's great hearth that warms them most, but Sadie, the Rallying Songbird and the tunes she weaves with her magical lute. Now a famous, boisterous performer able to outdrink any soldier she inevitably woos, Sadie rarely speaks of her mysterious origins. So what brought this enigmatic minstrel so far north? Gather round the fire, and listen to her tale.
Born to a contemptible Duke of the Mosune Empire, Sadie's early life was fraught with all the duties associated with one of her noble status -- etiquette classes, balls, public appearances -- none of which she expressed any interest in whatsoever. Though her father forbade the idea of his daughter becoming a musician, she practiced the lute in secret after attending the production of a traveling troupe and being gifted the instrument by one of its musicians. She was told the lute could stop death itself, if her heart indeed proved pure.
Upon learning of his daughter's disobedience, the incensed Duke decided to pay a visit to the troupe, intent on disbanding them. Becoming enamored with one of the performers, the Duke had his men cut her down alongside her husband when his advances were rejected. Unbeknownst to him, he had laid the seeds for a tale of revenge enacted by one now known as Hex, the Mad Diviner -- the adopted son of the murdered couple.
The Duke was slain in his own quarters by Hex, but was witnessed by Sadie while attempting to flee -- she'd come to denounce her father after learning of the massacre. Recognizing the girl from the performance, he slashed her across the ribs, believing she'd intentionally led the Duke to cut down his adoptive parents.
Mortally wounded, Sadie crawled to her quarters, desiring nothing more than to play one last song with her lute. Miraculously, the music sealed her own wounds -- the musician had been right all along. Knowing her life would be in danger the longer she remained, Sadie abandoned all titles and fled north, leaving her vile father's estate behind.
Welcomed by the men of Fort Blacklast, Sadie's reinvented herself as the resident songbird, happy to lend a hand alongside healers like Gwendolyn, the Diviner of the North. She keeps her bags packed, however, ready to move on should Hex return to finish the job.
