"Stone remembers, ice endures." -Brokkir The torchlight flickered across the decrepit halls beneath Fort Blacklast, in an ancient dwarven forge once known as Ironhold. Khadgrim paused before the shattered throne of stone and steel, the weight of memory heavy upon him. His eyes were as cold as the day he returned, yet an ember of vengeance still burned beneath the frost. He could still see it—the siege that nearly brought them to ruin. His father, Torgrim, was the Lord of Ironhold, Commander of the dwarven post allied to the North. That day, men and dwarves stood side by side, holding the line as frost giants thundered down from the North's uncharted glacial passes in the famous Siege of Blacklast. When the fortress walls began to crumble, his father took the field himself, wielding the Heart of the Mountain, the most powerful weapon ever forged by Brokkir, Harz's legendary smith. With each blow, he shattered stone and bone alike, buying time for Harz and his men to rally their lines. But alas, the tide was endless. When saboteurs began to tunnel their way into Blacklast, Torgrim took his men down into Ironhold to hold them off. They understood their fates were sealed, and when the halls of Ironhold began to give way, Khadgrim could only watch as his father vanished into the abyss, the hammer falling beside him. After the dust settled, the battle was won—but not without ruin. The few frost giants that remained escaped into the frozen wastes, and Khadgrim was found among the wounded, his body shattered, his breath shallow. He was carried to the upper halls, where Brokkir himself stood vigil beside the dying dwarf. Khadgrim's voice barely whispered. "Bring me the hammer," he rasped. None dared question him—but the weapon had been lost to the depths. Honoring his wishes, a small band of dwarves entered Ironhold, yet days later they returned empty-handed. The Heart of the Mountain, they said, was cemented in his father's hands. Only its heir could set it free. The caverns of Ironhold had gone dark and lifeless, yet when Khadgrim was brought near the hammer, its forges suddenly rekindled. The Heart of the Mountain blazed to life, and frost spread across Khadgrim's chest, sealing his wounds in shimmering ice. Some whispered that Torgrim's spirit lingered within it; others said the tundra itself had accepted Khadgrim as the rightful heir. With King Harz's support, Khadgrim led his kin back into Ironhold's depths. Together they rebuilt the shattered halls, reforging what the giants had broken. Yet, vengeance still slowly gnawed at his heart. Standing once more before the throne of Ironhold, Khadgrim drove his hammer into the stone. "The bastards tried to break us," he shouted, his breath curling in the cold. "And when they couldn't, they fled—like cowards!" "They believe us broken, but I promise you this: they will come to learn what remains of us. They will learn that stone remembers, and that ice endures."
