The Hollow Crown

"He thought he could walk the path of shadows and still hold the light. Now the darkness owns him." —Apsan, the Roaring Javelin On the Denso Prairie, where the winds howl and the earth once trembled beneath the thunderous hooves of the centaurs, Fenris learned early that survival wasn't about honor or pride. It was about power. And power, he realized, was never given freely. He served as military advisor to the Chieftain of his kind, watching in silent fury as his people's strength eroded under the weight of tradition despite his whispered admonitions. Apsan, the Roaring Javelin and son of the great Chieftain, was the only one who seemed to understand the true cost of survival—but even his mighty heart was tethered to old ways. Fenris had no such ties. In his eyes, the Centaurs' unwillingness to adapt to a modern world shackled them like animals in a pen, culling one generation at a time. When the Mosune Empire descended, bloated and cruel, Fenris saw the future: a kingdom not built on bloodlines or loyalty, but on conquest and domination. The Centaurs, with their pride and honor, were nothing but prey in a world of predators. They would be his ruin. For the right price, he betrayed everything—his people, his race, even the very blood in his veins. He laid bare their secrets. Exposed their weaknesses. The Chieftain was slain, a necessary sacrifice. And Apsan, once a brother in all but blood, was enslaved. In return, the Mosune gave him rank, a false crown. They gave him the illusion of power. But it was hollow—just a cage of gilded chains. Fenris had become nothing more than a puppet, a tool for the Empire's whims. And when his usefulness expired, they discarded him like refuse. Cast aside by the very masters he had sold his soul to, hunted as a traitor by his own kin, Fenris fled deep into the Blackroot Bog, where the earth itself seemed to mourn beneath his steps. It was there, in the swamp's thick fog, that he encountered Zelus. His name murmured in dark corners, a revenant whose very existence was a mockery of life and death. The Lord of Styx, a twisted creature who had stolen immortality at a terrible price. Fenris, broken and desperate, saw in Zelus not just a way to survive, but a means to transcend. With a smile that betrayed ancient horrors, Zelus offered him the chance to remake himself: for his soul and allegiance to the "great deity" of the Cursed Cult, he would wield power beyond mortal reckoning– the kind he had always dreamt of. A deal was struck in blood, and the centaur's flesh twisted with markings of a dark, ancient power. His body, once covered in proud tribal tattoos, was stripped of its history—carved from his skin in a brutal act of apostasy. The Cursed Khan was born. No longer a Centaur bound to the old ways, Fenris had become something darker—something more, something terrifying. His mind was twisted, bound to forces beyond his understanding, but his ambition burned still, hotter than ever. In his wake, there is naught left but ruin. And Fenris would burn this world to the ground if only to claim a crown of ash.
