Dr. Van Helsing no longer remembers how he died. Was his chest pierced while besieged by a horde of shambling corpses, or did a lich reach into his chest with a cold, ethereal skeletal claw and crush his heart? The memories before his death are but shards of broken glass—jagged, disjointed, and impossible to trust. He doesn't even know how he revived. All he knows is the sudden, violent reclaiming of his body. Like a puppet freed from its strings, he stood on a battlefield surrounded only by corpses. Some were as pale and withered as his own body, while others clearly died in this battle. Whatever the cost, Dr. Van Helsing has returned, and he seeks vengeance against the banes that turned him into what he is now. Necromancers and undead creations are all prey to his crossbow bolts.

The Anatomy of Night

"He treads in my darkness as if it were his laboratory." -Dracula Once, there was a man of science. Abraham Van Helsing, as he was known. A physician without equal, a healer with hands as steady as time's silent march. He fought disease and decay with reason, with the scalpel, with truth. But reason has no failsafe against the grave, and truth's tongue falters when fangs are at its throat. His family learned this lesson first. Claimed, every last one, by the lord of the night himself: Dracula. And though the world thought the good doctor would break while mourning their deaths, he did not. He studied them. For grief is a patient teacher, and its lessons are written in the marrow. In the years that followed, his work grew quiet, and the light beneath his door burned long into the hours when men should sleep. He began collecting the bodies of the faithless and the damned, those that bled wrong, that cackled when cut open... He tested, recorded, refined. And when his coffers ran dry, others came to fill them. They spoke of a spreading blight, of whispers crossing oceans, and offered to arm him with all he might need to contain it. In their service, or perhaps their shadow, Van Helsing learned that the curse he hunted was not hunger, but remembrance: memory gnawing on itself until nothing human remained. And for one as ancient as Dracula, the cure would not come from stake or flame. To end such a thing, the mind itself must turn traitor. Then came Mina. Bright, unguarded Mina. The student who had followed him from the lecture hall to the graveyard, and the only one who could still remind him that compassion was not weakness. And so, like all lights in Transylvania, she was devoured, and claimed by shadow. Van Helsing had failed to save her from the dark, yet through this, she showed him how to use it... From his grief came clarity. Together, they forged a prison not of walls, but of memory. Mina's light guided the ritual, and Van Helsing's science bound it. They sealed both man and the monster within their shared illusion, a dream from which only guilt could wake him. And so, somewhere within that design, a prisoner wanders nameless through the ruins of his own mind, a prince whose roots run deep in Transylvania, guided by a woman all in white. Now, Van Helsing works in secret beneath the veil, his scalpel as dexterous as a painter's brush, the canvas as busy as the mind of the damned. Each incision, a stroke; each broken memory, a shade in his magnum opus. He watches from the veil as his victim claws toward the truth, unaware that the very hands guiding him are those that bound him. To Van Helsing, this is practical science, better a dreaming monster than a waking one. But even in dreams, blood remembers. And one day, the doctor knows, the patient will awaken.
