"Carosa is a gifted student, but her interest in the unspeakable borders on obsession..." Excerpt from a White Tower student evaluation For the students of the White Tower, the pursuit of knowledge is the ultimate ambition. But there is some research that even the White Tower strictly restricts. The Forbidden Scholar Carosa is fascinated by this illicit knowledge. Carosa was raised by her father, a wealthy mage who imparted her with a love of learning. When he passed away, Carosa's grandparents sent her to the White Tower to study the magic arts. But Carosa missed her father terribly. The summer of her sixteenth year, she was visiting her grandparents when she discovered a leatherbound book in her father's old study. She felt drawn to it, as though it had been waiting for her. The worn pages within described the Nether God, mysterious keeper of the secrets of life and death. Fascinated, Carosa began researching the Nether God. She became convinced that the god's powers could restore her father's life. Using her father's book, she discovered a method for bringing the dead back to life. But like all of the Nether God's blessings, the magic demanded a terrible cost. Carosa added a dose of deadly phantom orchid powder to her grandmother's morning tea. As her grandmother died in agony, her father's corpse twitched to life. The Nether God traded a life for a life, but the spell went awry. Carosa's revived father was unresponsive, incapable of doing anything except stare at her in silent horror. Unable to stand his empty gaze, Carosa buried the still breathing body behind her family's house. She attributed her father's condition to a simple error in her spell, and decided to devote her life to mastering the art of dark magic. As both a Scholar of the White Tower and a devoted servant of the Nether God, Carosa pursues forbidden knowledge heedless of its costs.
