The Pursuit of Glory

Being born into a noble family like Barclay's in the Mosune Empire can be both a blessing and a curse. To an outsider, the opulent and lavish lifestyle he once led, filled with constant balls, feasts, and tourneys, may seem to be paradise but the life of a Mosunian noble is fraught with intrigue, sensibilities, and a code of conduct and morals so crippling it has led to the undoing of many an aristocrat. It is for this reason that many prefer the stability of a career in the Solarian priesthood or the relative freedom of the life of a knight in pursuit of purity, an ancient and tested way of proving one's worth in the empire and increasing one's social standing. However, only a select few great warriors are ever made knights. Barclay has long believed he has the potential to be one such warrior. A distant relation of the emperor, Barclay felt he was destined for a life as a knight, spending his early years training with his martial arts teacher in the way of the sword, the bow, and the pike. While he struggled with the sword and bow, he found his true skill lay in the pike. After serving a campaign under the emperor to expand the realm's borders, Barclay requested the emperor make him a knight. As dictated by tradition, the emperor gave him a quest to prove he had the traits essential in a Mosunian knight. He told Barclay to bring him the head of the giant Bendigil living in the mountains of the border of the realm that had been terrorizing shepherds. Barclay agreed and after a long, perilous journey following a map given by the emperor, he found the lair of the giant, asleep. Barclay slew the giant and took its head as a trophy, triumphantly presenting it to the emperor. Fearing Barclay was perhaps too arrogant for knighthood and seeing the giant's head with its eyes closed, the emperor denied Barclay's request and refused to make him a knight as he had not shown sufficient bravery, having killed the giant as it slept. Outraged, Barclay set out on a mission to prove himself to the emperor, traveling around Tya to demonstrate his worth so that one day, the emperor would regret his decision.
