Once part of a band of pickpockets operating in the bustling docks of Fort Celeste, Wagrak is not the most skilled of mages, although he is talented by Goblin standards, but his devious nature, agility, and good luck mean he should not be entirely overlooked. When a galley from the White Tower of the Mages docked, Wagrak's band thought the wealthy mages draped in fine silks and velvet stepping off in search of mercenaries would be perfect targets. As the pickpockets set to work, they were accosted by the city guards, almost certainly to be condemned to a slow death in a gibbet. For the time being, what awaited Wagrak would be a fate worse than death as a mage slipped a bribe to the guards so he could take the Goblin as his familiar. Brought back to the White Tower, Wagrak's master tested all manner of painful and humiliating spells on him, but Wagrak was biding his time, reading books on magic when he could and learning about magical staffs. One night, after his master had almost paralyzed him to entertain the undergraduates, as the mage slept in his bed, Wagrak crept into his chambers, unshackled as he was thought to be close to death anyway, and picked up his staff before casting the same spell on him. However, it went wrong and instead his master levitated, floating away in his sleep out of the window into the starlit night, before plummeting into the icy depths of the ocean. Seeing his opportunity, Wagrak escaped on a galley back to the mainland where he joined another band of thieves, even more dangerous than before.
