Akira squeezed through the crack in the castle tower's window like a ray of moonlight. Her lace skirt brushed against the windowsill without making a single sound.
The eyes behind the mask swept over the sleeping guard, who was still clutching a half-empty bottle of wine.
The magic alarm grid had barely begun to hum when she flicked three silver needles, pinning them precisely into the magic nodes on the wall. The electric grid vanished with a pop, like a burst bubble.
The king's scepter was right in front of her.
She walked over and casually pulled up the guard's slipped blanket, covering his shoulders.
With the scepter in her grasp, the sound of flapping dragon wings came from outside the tower.
"Night patrol?" she muttered, flipping out of the window, grabbing the tail of a passing griffon, and vanishing into the clouds.
When the guard woke up, there was a note on the table: Borrowed for one night. Returning it tomorrow.

—Setram
The city is alive.
There is chatter among the cogs, crankshafts, and dynamos. Steam is the breath; oil, the blood.
The city is on fire.
A breach in the hull. Violence at the wound. Alarms sing like sirens in a metal sea. From the Core emerges its lone protector—an iron titan forged for this purpose alone. Screams. Smoke. Then silence. The city hums with self-surgery as the breach seals.
The city is quiet.
Setram patrols the wreckage, scanning for heartbeats, expecting none. Then, a sound registers: small, irregular, imprecise. He locates it beneath a slab of alloy and tears the metal free, crosshairs aligning.
The toddler stirs, its tiny eyes staring upward—fearful, but curious.
Setram's internal systems cycle through threat assessments, termination protocols, probability trees. None resolve. The presence maps to neither enemy nor collateral. Steam vents from his hull.
Then, a giggle. The sound ripples through his circuitry, creating a sensation. He enjoys the feeling.
For years, Setram looks after Akira, gathering bionic fuel, salvaging texts, instructing her in code and the binary hum of machine-speak. Within the brass atriums and whirring arteries of Mechapolis, she grows into a brilliant, reckless tinkerer, piecing together the city's ancient past.
Her meddling pointed to creators long gone: a Dwarven race that had peered into the abyss, forged Setram's kin, and built Mechapolis around an elusive Core. Yet, their records end abruptly. Akira came to suspect that the city was deliberately abandoned, leaving only Setram behind to defend it. The city felt crowded with intent, full of elaborate mechanisms followed by empty spaces, much like a thought that never finished forming.
Her obsession narrows: dynamic projections, phase-shifting, volumetric displays synced to perception. If the unfinished Core still carries the dwarves' final message, she will be the first to make it speak.
During her most ambitious experiment, Akira pushes too far. A collapse of light—agony. Her left side is lost in the phasal transfer. Straddled between life and death, she fused the phase-converter into her nervous system, waking as something wholly new. In the pulsing afterglow, she learns she can blink through space, her phantom flickering beside her like a living echo—an imprint responsive to thought.
Setram detects risk: The Core has been tampered with. He issues her an ultimatum:
Never leave the city. He must defend the Core at all costs.
For a time, she obeys. But her phantom hums restlessly, sharpening as it reacts to signals beyond the walls. One night, visions flood her mind: forests dissolving into violet sludge, stone sinking like ash, corruption spreading across Tya in hungry waves.
Then, the phantom snaps. Akira vanishes.
She reappears miles beyond Mechapolis beneath a sky veined with violent purple light. The blight hungers for metal, flesh, and will. Her phantom recoils, fragments, then reforms. Akira understands: Core technology had been designed to burn this sickness away. She must finish what they began.
She races back toward Mechapolis, but Setram has already awakened to her absence. Conditions have been broken. Core protocols trigger. He receives them in full:
CORE POWER: LOST.
PRIORITY: ABSOLUTE.
RETRIEVE OR TERMINATE.
He stands at the gates, engines overclocked, vents hissing. His cannon is raised. Sparks crawl across his armor as his defense protocols engage.
She stalls at the ramp, her phantom stabilizing beside her like a second heartbeat, its form hardening in resolve.
Father and daughter.
Protector and protected.
Reclaimer and runaway.
No words. Only directives.
And the heartbeat before one of them strikes first.
